The Tampa Bay Lightning took advantage of the Vancouver Canucks desire to shed a veteran defenceman. Derek Holland Jersey . Numbers Game looks at the deal sending Jason Garrison back to the state of Florida. The Lighting Get: D Jason Garrison and LW Jeff Costello. Garrison, 29, is a defenceman with good size and a cannon of a shot from the point who tied a career-high with 33 points last seasn and will be able to handle top-four minutes on the Tampa Bay defence. Garrison has played more than 20 minutes per game in each of the past four seasons and, over the course of those four years, no defenceman has fired shots at a higher rate on the power play. Over the past three seasons, he ranks 15th among defencemen with 2.16 shots on goal per game and has missed a total of seven games, so hes been durable. Last season wasnt Garrisons best, in terms of possession stats, but hes had positive possession numbers in the past, so last year shouldnt preclude him from being a useful part of the Tampa Bay defence. In Tampa Bay, the Lightning really needed an upgrade on defence. Victor Hedman and Matt Carle were the only defencemen on the roster that averaged more than 20 minutes per game last season and Garrison will add stability, as well as a power play point threat, to that group. Garrison had to waive his no-trade clause for the deal to go through, and he has four years, at a cap hit of $4.6-million, remaining on his contract. Its also not a bad deal for Tampa Bay since the contracdt was front-loaded, so the last four years come at a total cost of $15.6-million (an average of $3.9-million per season). Costello is a 23-year-old winger who finished a four-year career at Notre Dame, scoring 82 points in 145 games. He was acquired from Ottawa at the trade deadline, but hes not signed and may be set to become a pro free agent after August 15. The Lightning dont currently have much room on their reserve list, and the Canucks could also use the extra room in their attempts to acquire more players. The Canucks Get: A second-round pick. The 50th overall pick presents about a one-in-three chance of netting an NHL player. While its useful to get an asset, the move is more about clearing room on the Vancouver blueline. Chris Tanev joins Dan Hamhuis, Kevin Bieksa and Alexander Edler in the top four on defence, and newly-acquired Luca Sbisa can pair with Ryan Stanton on the third pair, so there was room for the Canucks to move out an established NHL defenceman and, just as importantly move out the accompanying salary. Its been a busy day, just leading up to the draft, for the Canucks, so there could very well be more to come but, whats been done establishes that Vancouver will be younger than they were last season, with financial flexibility to make moves this summer if they so choose. With a new regime, it would come as no surprise if the Canucks continue to be active in their attempt to re-build the roster. The Eastern Conference-leading Celtics finished their recent trek at 3-1 on Monday in Salt Lake City when Rajon Rondo made a key jumper with 24.1 seconds remaining, as Boston held off the Utah Jazz, 107-102, at EnergySolutions Arena.Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Tanev celebrated his 25th birthday with the game-winning goal just 18 seconds into overtime, lifting the Vancouver Canucks to a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Saturday at Rogers Arena. The Flames, who battled back from a 2-0 deficit that included an own goal, had the first shot of the extra period. It went wide and the Canucks raced the other way. Henrik Sedin carried the puck into the Calgary zone along the left wing and sent a pass back to a trailing Tanev, who snapped a shot from the slot past Jonas Hiller for his second goal of the season. Radim Vrbata scored and Yannick Weber was credited with a goal for Vancouver when the Flames shot the puck into their own empty net on a delayed penalty. Ryan Miller made 26 saves for the Canucks, who snapped a five-game skid. Vancouver forward Jannik Hansen collapsed on the bench during the second period, but was apparently better in the locker room. He did not return for precautionary reasons. I dont think theres going to be a problem, said Canucks coach Willie Desjardins after the game. Everything looks good. Shortly after taking a hit from Calgarys Dennis Wideman, Hansen skated to the Vancouver bench and remained hunched over. He appeared to go limp as his teammates helped and quickly banged their sticks on the boards for the officials to stop play. Medical personnel rushed to Hansens aid and helped him into the locker room. He seemed like he couldnt get his breath there, Desjardins added. He kind of went down. When that happens its not usual, so youre concerned. But everythings checked out at the hospital and everything is fine. David Jones and Johnny Gaudreau scored for Calgary, which finally picked up a point after losing seven straight in regulation. The Flames so desperately wanted at least one point, they held the puck in their own zone for the final 10 seconds of regulation rather than attack the Vancouver end. Hiller finished with 30 saves in defeat, but wasnt even on the ice for the first Vancouver goal. Moments after the referees arm went up for a Canucks penalty, Hiller left the net for an extra skater and Calgary controlled the puck behind the Vancouver cage. Carlos Gomez Jersey. Wideman sent a pass back toward the right point, but the puck caromed off the boards past a teammate and slid all the way into the vacated cage. I dont know what to tell you, it was a basic pass back to the point that kind of handcuffed him, took a funny bounce off the wall and ran all the way down the ice and into the net, said Wideman. Weber was credited with the fluky goal, but the Canucks scored a legitimate goal just under five minutes later on a power play. Alexandre Burrows was whacking away at the puck at the right side of the crease and it popped loose in front, allowing Vrbata to sweep it home for his 13th goal. Calgary pulled within one with 7:31 left in the second period. Miller failed to control a couple of rebounds as the Flames buzzed around the offensive zone. A Kris Russell shot from the left circle went in and out of Millers glove and Jones was there to knock in the rebound for his sixth goal. The Flames had a goal waved off late in the second when it was ruled that Joe Colbornes shot from in close went in after the net was dislodged, but tied it just over seven minutes into the third when Gaudreau snapped a shot from the inside edge of the right circle through Millers pads for his seventh goal. Calgary nearly took the lead a few minutes later while short-handed when Lance Bouma raced in on a breakaway, but was denied by Miller. Goals are tough to come by, said Flames coach Bob Hartley. It would have been easy to fold the tent, but credit to our guys, they battled back. I thought we played a pretty solid game. Game Notes Tanev has two career overtime winners ... The Canucks ended an 0-for-19 slump on the power play with their man-advantage goal in the first period. They finished 1-for-4 with the extra skater ... The Flames were 0-for-3 on the power play ... Vancouver has won both meetings this season, also taking a 4-2 decision on Oct. 8 in Calgary ... The Canucks improved to 12-0-1 when leading after two periods. Discount NFL Jerseys China Jerseys Wholesale Wholesale Authentic Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys 2020 Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Cheap Jerseys China Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic ' ' '
